World Leader of the Year: Cynthia McKinney: the leader who risked her life to save the lives of people in a foreign land.

David Swanson Wows Audience
At the November 24 meeting, guest speaker David Swanson gave us 59 reasons why the U.S. should get out of Afghanistan, now!  Mr. Swanson's give-and-take with the audience electrified all those present, and a superb Q&A session followed his main presentation.  The PHDC heartily recommends David's new book, "DAYBREAK: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union."

Patrick Henry Democratic Club Opposes Tuition Hike; Supports All U.C. Students
In a strongly worded resolution, the PHDC voted on November 23 to oppose the University of California's self-serving (and education-less) tuition hike voted in by the Regents on November 18-19.

Patrick Henry Democratic Club Endorses Membership First
The annual Screen Actors Guild Board of Directors elections is happening right now.  The PHDC has opted to endorse the Membership First slate of candidates for President (Anne-Marie Johnson), Secretary-Treasurer (Connie Stevens) and Board Members due to their outstanding dedication to protecting the rights and incomes of the members of the guild, rather than sacrifice them to the producers the way the so-called "United For Strength" actor-producers do.  A close look at both slates will clearly show that UFS is composed of ultra-rich actors and actor-producers who are dedicated to uniting the 120,000 member guild with the tiny, under 12,000 member AFTRA union and in the process give away virtually all residual rights of actors (which AFTRA already did).  UFS is also dedicated to closing the SAG retirment home that many long time, hard-working members paid for and look forward to or are living in for their retirement.

California Democratic Party Chairman John Burton's Statement On the Passing of DNC Member and Longtime Democratic Activist Inola Henry

"Inola Henry embodied the spirit of the Democratic Party. A longtime teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, she dedicated her life to education and social justice.

"The great-granddaughter of a slave who escaped to freedom, Henry was active in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in her youth. As an adult, she helped found the Watts Summer Festival after the 1965 riots. She worked to promote positive race and human relations for the last two districts in LAUSD.

"Involved in Democratic politics since the 1960s, Henry served as the Resolutions Committee chairwoman of the California Democratic Party for decades.

"As a member of the Democratic National Committee, Henry has attended many national conventions. Last year in Denver, she proudly voted for Barack Obama to be the Democratic nominee for president.

"Our condolences and prayers go out to her family and friends. Inola Henry will be truly missed."

Once again, California's Democratic legislators have gone completely insane.  The newest kick is a crusade from Senator Dean Florez, candidate for Lt. Governor, and Assemblyman Pedro Nava, candidate for Attorney General, who both seem to think that the most anti-civil rights, fake-crime-fighting laws will somehow make them "tough on crime" when what they really do is make it tough for law-abiding citizens to live a normal life.  SB 250, the Mandatory Spay-Neuter bill that is coming up for a vote in the assembly is just the beginning.  Not satisfied with making pet ownership (and all the associated businesses in CA, including pet stores, veterinary clinics and hospitals) a violation of the law, they now want to make it illegal for you to purchase a soda or use a bathroom in any property that, unknown to YOU, may be or have been used for animal-fighting (instead of going after the promoters and owners themselves), invade your home if you ever consider selling a pet and inspect it (and potentially take it from you), and so on.  This is not a joke.  Read here for the details, and look it up yourself.
Try to imagine a world where the blind cannot have seeing-eye dogs, or the deaf hearing-ear dogs, or any other kind of service animals (except police dogs - they get to keep those!).
CALL YOUR ASSEMBLYMEMBER AND ASK THEM TO VOTE NO ON SB250!

Members of the PHDC were fans of Michael Jackson and are deeply saddened by the tragic loss.  The Patrick Henry Young Democrats grew up dancing to Michael's music.  He will be remembered as one of the greatest musical talents of all time.
Our condolences also go out to Ryan O'Neal and the family of Charlie's most beautiful Angel.

We emphatically OPPOSE SB 250 (it is draconian, a colossal waste of money and will mean the end of pets and pet shows in California)!

How can we afford to waste $250 MILLION (projected cost) on SB 250 when we cant even invest in health care for our people (SB 810)????  Has the CA Senate lost its collective mind (oxymoron, we know)?!?!?

For the amount of (our) money Congress* has essentially given away,
we could OWN the banks, insurance corporations, pharmaceutical manufacturers, General Motors and Chrysler, maybe even the oil corporations, then changed all the executive compensation packages to eliminate their "golden parachutes" and fired the beyond-rich fatcat <censored>s who got us into this situation DEPRESSION in the first place.
(Of course, since they own our government anyway, this will never happen.)
(* Along with President "Change You Can Believe In" Obama.  Actually, come to think of it, this really is change we can believe in.
Any real change would be unbelievable anyway, wouldn't it?  How Orwellian is that?)

REAL SOLUTION:
LET THE CORPORATIONS FAIL!

That's what would happen in a true free market economy, not a corporate welfare state like the U.S.
Real Solution, Part II: Restore the personal and corporate income taxes to 1960 levels.
Real Solution, Part III: Restore all the post-1929 regulations that were designed exactly to prevent this from happening
(but which have been systematically dismantled, bit by bit since 1981 - think Reagan-Bush-Clinton/Gingrich-Bush2...).

BIG PHARMA'S SOLUTION TO THE ECONOMIC CRISIS (DEPRESSION):
1: Cut back on free samples to doctors (and Hospitals?)*
2: RAISE ALL PRESCRIPTION PRICES**
3: ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE!
THAT OUGHT TO HELP THE ECONOMY NO END, RIGHT???
Do you ever wonder what happened to the days when prescription medications could not be advertised at all, and pharmaceutical manufacturers could pour all that money into research instead?
Are you even old enough to remember this?
(* Free samples - tons of them - is how Johnson & Johnson convinced doctors and hospitals to use Tylenol instead of aspirin.  The dangers of using aspirin weren't discovered until years later, and the dangers of liver failure from Tylenol are still kept hush-hush.)
(** Didn't notice yet?  You will.  Some went up small amount, while others went up as much as 60%.)

INSURANCE SOLUTION TO THE ECONOMIC CRISIS (DEPRESSION):
RAISE PREMIUMS!
Who cares that insurance used to be carefully structured and monitored but legalized gambling?  Now, it's just profit taking, and when you can't take a profit from the subscribers and unregulated gambling (derivatives), take it from the GOVERNMENT / PEOPLE / GRANDKIDS / EVERYONE ELSE!
(Welfare is ok, as long as it's corporate, not for the poor who actually need it.)

BANKERS' SOLUTION TO THE ECONOMIC CRISIS (DEPRESSION):
1: Flagrantly waste resources on worthless bloated Credit Default Swaps (derivatives)*
2: Buy every politician available (i.e., the ones they didn't already own)
3: Convince (bribe) Congress to bail them out
4: Dish out lavish bonuses (despite being over $1 TRILLION in debt)
5: Party, party, party on expensive new yachts and planes
6: Keep the loan market closed until NO ONE ELSE has any money at all.

RESOLUTION
Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives concerning the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Whereas over 95 percent of the deaths incurred since the escalation of violence in Gaza beginning December 27, 2008, have been Palestinians;
Whereas over 50 percent of the population of Gaza is under the age of 14;
Whereas on January 7, 2009, the United Nations found that over one-third of the Palestinians killed in Gaza were civilians, while over 1,300 of the injured are children;
Whereas on January 6, 2009, 40 civilians were killed and 55 civilians were injured when the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) bombed two United Nations facilities, including a school, where Palestinians were seeking shelter;
Whereas nearly the entire population of Gaza has no access to potable water or functioning water systems, and sewage and wastewater systems have seized due to lack of water and electricity, causing sewage overflows in some residential neighborhoods, creating a public health crisis, according to the World Bank;
Whereas reports indicate that since the beginning of the Israeli imposed blockade in February 2006, approximately 200 Palestinians in Gaza have died due to lack of access to medical goods and aid;
Whereas on January 7 and 8, 2009, the International Committee of the Red Cross found a total of up to 65 bodies in two separate locations, both of which included a number of emaciated children, in houses bombed in the south of Gaza after four days of lack of ambulance access;
Whereas the United Nations Relief and Works Agency and the International Committee of the Red Cross were temporarily forced to halt all aid shipments, following the death of two United Nations aid truck drivers; and
Whereas Articles 55 and 56 of the 4th Geneva Convention require `ensuring the food and medical supplies of the population' and `ensuring and maintaining . . . the medical and hospital establishments and services, public health and hygiene': Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the House of Representatives calls on the Government of Israel and representatives of Hamas to implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and to allow unrestricted humanitarian access in Gaza

Today I participated in ANSWER's march and rally, "Let Gaza Live" in Washington, D.C. Attendance was excellent despite the weather. Among the many friends in attendance, I met a young man and his daughter who had come all the way from Greensboro, North Carolina to participate. The crowd was one of the most diverse that I have ever seen. I think our message is reaching deep into our country's heartland. Here are my remarks:

"Let Gaza Live"
Washington, D.C.

We don't see the images. They are neatly censored from our view in this country. But everywhere else around the world the carnage that is Gaza is being seen and the people are revolted by what they see.
They see dead babies, decapitated bodies, defenseless relief workers killed. Maimed men, makeshift morgues, mortified mothers.
They see exploding white phosphorus shells, cluster bombs, depleted uranium munitions.
They see what is reportedly the world's fourth most powerful military using all of its power against a defenseless people.
In fact, they are witnesses to 15 days of war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and genocide.
They see Hugo Chavez expel Venezuela's Israeli Ambassador and they see lawmakers in Ecuador condemn Israel's actions, calling for an investigation into Israel's crimes against humanity.
And despite the obvious facts of an Israeli-sponsored terror campaign against Palestinians in Gaza, a piece of territory roughly twice the size of the District of Columbia, they see the U.S. Congress support a resolution totally supporting Israel, even though Israel is in violation of U.S. and international law.
They see Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, swaggering in insult to black America by initially refusing to seat Roland Burris from Illinois in the Senate, yet that same Reid cowers before the pro-Israel lobby, and they wonder why.
And sadly, they see the U.S. President-elect, who roared onto the scene like a lion, remain as quiet as a lamb in the face of the utter inhumanity of Israel's actions, and they wonder why.
And then, they see us. Gathered here in front of the White House, reaffirming our own humanity, and that of millions of people around the world, including in Israel, who disagree with this death and destruction.  The tears of the Palestinians roll down our cheeks, even as we bury our own victims of police murder.
A new day is coming in U.S. politics. We will use the power of our vote to change U.S. policy. We will no longer check our values at the door and support politicians and political parties that fail to deliver.
Not one more bomb to Israel.
In defense of humanity, we will not give up and we will win.

Cynthia Ann McKinney (born March 17, 1955) is a former United States Representative and the 2008 Green Party nominee for President of the United States. McKinney served as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993–2003 and 2005–2007, first representing Georgia's 11th Congressional District and then Georgia's 4th Congressional District. She is the first African-American woman to have represented Georgia in the House.[1] In the 1992 election, McKinney was elected in the newly re-created 11th District,[2] and was re-elected in 1994. When her district was redrawn and renumbered due to the Supreme Court of the United States ruling in Miller v. Johnson,[3][1][4] McKinney was easily elected from the new 4th District in the 1996 election, and was re-elected twice without substantive opposition. All three of PHDC's 2008 annual award winners who serve in the House of Representatives voted AGAINST a resolution justifying ethnic cleansing and the bombing and torturing of children.  We are very proud of the actions of these great leaders.
The most courageous members of Congress, Dennis Kucinich, Tammy Moore, Ron Paul, Nick Rahall and Maxine Waters, voted "nay" to ethnic cleansing. These and only these leaders had the courage to go on record, voting "nay,"  on the resolution in support of of bombing children and refusing surviving children medical aid.
Those who voted "present" on the resolution to endorse the ethnic cleansing and bombing of children, thereby also taking a weaker stand against these practices, were

Kucinich Does It Again!

Showing the courage lacking in the Democratic Leadership in the House, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich introduces 35 articles of Impeachment against George W. Bush.  Says he'll com be ack with 50 if these are not considered right away.  Wexler, Lee and Woolsey all endorse the bill, H Res 1258.
(Pelosi continues to stall the Democratic Party, the American People, and pretty much anyone not in the White House already....)
Mass Media fail to report on this, or demean the effort (of course!).

It's official: DemocraticUnderground.com is an unregistered PAC for the DLC
If you are a liberal, prepare to be tombstoned at the Democratic Underground.   DemocraticUnderground.com has recently increased its purging of Kucitizens and other liberals.   Simply posting a message that Kucinich has called for the cutting of funding for the war can get a person banned at DU.  Pointing out that Kucinich is right got another poster banned over there.  These are just two of a great many of examples why being a liberal is a tombstonable offense over at DU.  Has DU filed the necessary papers with the FEC to be an advocacy group for certain 2008 DLC (conservative) candidates?  Are they advising their donors that the donations will be going to promoting DLC candidates and to opposing liberal Democrats?  We recommend that all progressives try a forum that is a welcome home to progressive Democrats and other liberals: http://progressiveindependent.com.

A long time ago in a country far, far away, a rising dictator managed to use a national tragedy as an excuse (1) to round up thousands of suspected terrorists, imprisoning or deporting them,  (2) to push through anti-terrorism legislation, (3) to solidify his power and gain popularity, making dissent unpatriotic, (4) to round up and imprison citizens without the right of trial, (5) later, to use his new-found powers to go to war and invade helpless countries for false reasons and take their resources and  (6) to kill a great many of his countries soldiers in these wars and a great many innocent civilians, both in his country and around the world....

In church, I have learned that forgiveness is not for the benefit of the forgiven but rather for the benefit of the forgiver.  However, most children in America do not attend my church.  I suspect that, when they learn what the current adult generation is not telling them, most will have a lot of difficulty forgiving any parents who support or vote for the Bush administration.   It will be a lot easier for these children to forgive if they do not have to suffer through another four years.  Those four years will further endanger every life on Earth.
