The Patrick Henry Democratic Club acknowledges the courage of the members of the Hollywood Division of the Screen Actors Guild in voting by approximately a 3-1 margin to support and endorse Dennis Kucinich's Department of Peace and Non-Violence and to create a celebrity speakers bureau in support of the Department of Peace on July 16, 2006.   Back in April, the membership of the Screen Actors Guild voted to support lowering the voting age in national elections. The Screen Actors Guild is leading America into the future and leaving other lagging groups in the dark ages. We encourage all organizations to get on board and support peace and human rights.

If you know of anyone who reads the Democratic Underground, ask them why they are reading a site that supports and promotes racist lies against African-American members of Congress. It's time that all who believe in fairness and honesty and who object to racism, stop frequenting the DU.

Bush supporters in the Democratic Underground (a known DLC/DINO/Republican hangout) have taken offense to Ron Paul, who recently expressed support for the impeachment of George W. Bush and who has a strong history of opposition to war, war funding, USA-PATRIOT, and the disastrous free trade agreements. Certain individuals in the DU (very likely pro-Bush Freepers) want us to lie about Ron Paul’s record and to exclude his name from a list of Congressmen who opposed a resolution that, according to the conscience of the Democratic Party (Dennis Kucinich), placed “the United States on a dangerous path that could lead to war” with Iran. WE REFUSE TO LIE. The members of the PHDC believe that truth is more important than partisan politics and therefore we stand by the truth. We will not lie about Ron Paul’s voting record and we will continue to support the non-partisan call for the impeachment of George W. Bush. We ask all Americans of all parties to join us in supporting truth over lies and in supporting the impeachment of George W. Bush.   We continue to call on all members of all parties to join Dennis Kucinich, Jim McDermott, Ron Paul and Pete Stark in their opposition to war with Iran.

Everyone call and thank our Congressman of the Year, Dennis Kucinich, and our Congresswoman of the Year, Maxine Waters, for their co-sponsorship of the renewal of the Voting Rights Act. We must also encourage the Senate to renew the Act. Sensenbrenner did make some changes in the Act and we are looking into these. The Voting Rights Act is important for insuring all Americans have a fair opportunity to vote.

Congratulations to all of the more than 60 endorsed candidates who have won their 2006 primaries in California, Connecticut, Georgia, Ilinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, and Texas.

Bush Administration and Rigged Diebold Machines hold Cynthia McKinney to a plurality.

Exit polls show McKinney winning by a majority but Diebold steals another victory. In a desperate effort to defeat Cynthia McKinney, the neo-cons ran two right-wing extremists in the Democratic Primary in a state where all Republicans can vote in the Democratic Primary. Adding to McKinney's problems were Diebold machines that changed votes for McKinney into votes for Hank Johnson, a neo-con of the Clarence Thomas variety. Learning about the rigging from a voter who tried to have the switch corrected and was told 'next election,' McKinney put out an alert. Despite Diebold and the heavy right-wing funding of her opponents, Cynthia won a clear plurality.

However, on August 8th, she will face Diebold and well-financed, neo-con Hank Johnson for a runoff. Cynthia McKinney, who was tied on our 2005 human rights voting chart for the top Congresswoman score, and who is currently scoring very high on the 2006 human rights chart, was targeted for questioning the cause of 9/11 and the war in Iraq. If America loses McKinney, it will have a chilling effect on Congresspersons considering bringing out the truth about the Bush Administration. Therefore, ask everyone you know to donate all they can to this brave champion of truth and human rights. A dollar for Cynthia is a dollar against the Bush Administration. Now is the time for all Democrats to take a stand for a leader who is under fire for standing up for us. On August 9th, 2006, Georgia's 4th District seat will be either in the hands of Cynthia McKinney or in the hands of the Bush Administration.

On July 31, 2005, the California Democratic Party called for the lowering of the voting age and full youth participation in conventions, caucuses, committees and other meetings and events in our Party. At that time, Americans were assured by the California Democratic Party, which unanimously voted to support the resolution, that they could count on the Party’s support in their quest to lower the voting age. On April 28th, Christine Pelosi (the chairman of the CDP Platform Committee) broke that promise to America’s youth in her refusal to support any platform amendment based on the resolution. She also allowed Dr. Jo Olson to demoralize America’s youth by insulting the brain size and intelligence of 70 million Americans. A great many teens who came to the convention left the next morning in total disgust over Pelosi’s committee’s hate session against the youth and vowed to turn their backs on the California Democratic Party as it had turned its back on them.

SHAME ON PELOSI FOR HER STANCE AGAINST DEMOCRACY, HER BREAKING OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY’S WORD TO MORE THAN 70 MILLION AMERICANS AND FOR ALLOWING A MEMBER OF THE PLATFORM COMMITTEE TO ABUSE HER POSITION ON THE COMMITTEE TO CONDUCT A PERSONAL VENDETTA AGAINST A CHILD AND INSULT AND DEGRADE MORE THAN 70 MILLION AMERICANS.

DEMOCRATIC ELECTED OFFICIALS AND CANDIDATES COME OUT IN SUPPORT OF LOWERING VOTING AGE

Those teens who didn’t leave the convention spoke with elected officials and candidates and found that the vast majority of elected officials were strong supporters of lowering the voting age.   Elected officials who have expressed strong support for lowering the voting age include Paul Koretz, Jackie Speier, Deborah Bowen and Maxine Waters. Steve Westly told two of the Berkeley National Youth Rights Association members he thought lowering the voting age was "a great idea.” The youth also got express support from the vast majority of current Democratic candidates with whom they spoke.

War with Iran?

Why did the House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Whip Hoyer twice vote for legislation leading towards war in Iran and also to give $513 billion to war profiteers? Most House members are following the Democratic leaders into war with Iran and in looting our treasury. Americans expect those Representatives for whom they vote to pick better Democratic leadership in the House.

The following four Representatives voted twice against legislation leading to war with Iran, against war with Hamas, and also against looting that $513 billion from our treasury to fund war profiteers: Dennis Kucinich, Jim McDermott, Ron Paul and Pete Stark. If you oppose war, show your gratitufe to these courageous opponents of war. Also, demand that your Representative back an opponent of war with Iran for Democratic leader and whip.

With this budgeted amount, we, the United States, are now spending more on the military than the rest of the world COMBINED. Whom do we need to defend ourselves against at such a high price (that our children, not us, will pay)? How is that much money going to protect us from terrorists (like W and co.)? It won't.

Michael Morales lives, and no new death warrant will be issued by the trial judge. We would like to thank everyone who called Arnold or Bill Lockyer, but mostly let us all thank the two unnamed anesthesiologists who put ethics and life before genocide and death. Lastly, and most poignantly, we honor the memory of Stan "Tookie" Williams, whose 37-minute execution was the reason for the requirement of the anesthesiologists. Let us hope that this means the end of capital punishment in California.

Did Cheney shoot Whittington on Friday (as Whittington said) or on Saturday (as Cheney said)? Was it really Friday or was Whittington sending us a signal to disregard his comments?

A unilateral act by Fabian Nunez and Judy Chu derailed a bill aimed at saving 648 people who were mostly placed on death row for the wrong reason: ie they were poor or members of a minority group. Last year, Paul Koretz and Sally Lieber introduced a bill designed to let these people live long enough to see if they were innocent. A hold placed on it by one person (Judy Chu), reportedly at the insistence of Fabian Nunez, killed the bill before the it had a chance to come to a vote.

Thanks to petitions and outrage and concerns from voters, 41 Senators said no to waiving a point of order which conflicted with the measure (S.852, the bill to reduce or eliminate any compensation for victims of asbestos diseases and other problems) and the end result was that the asbestos bill was sent back to committee. Here is the vote that killed the asbestos bill. Kucinich Speaks Out as Tensions Escalate in Middle East

Congressman Kucinich issued the following statement this week on the current situation in the Middle East:
"The lack of proportionality of Israel's response to the kidnapping of the soldier compounds a human rights disaster which has been building in the Palestinian territories and could set the stage for reigniting a cycle of extreme violence.
"The world community, led by the United States and Israel, must see the humanitarian imperative of relieving the suffering of innocent people in Palestine who are without the most basic of human necessities such as food, water, electricity, health care, housing, and economic security, in part because they exercised their right to self determination.
"The Hamas government needs to ensure the safe return of Cpl. Shalit and renounce its previous statements calling for the destruction of Israel, and end attacks against innocent Israeli civilians.
"Likewise, the Israeli government needs to halt its incursion into Gaza, withdraw its troops, facilitate payments to Palestinian civil servants, and renew its commitment to a viable two state solution which will ensure the survival of both the Palestinian and Israeli people. Such a commitment can only come about from a common recognition of common humanity.
"The governments of Israel and Palestine should exercise caution and compassion in the name of joint security and peace in the region. Peace will not prevail unless both sides are willing to call a cease fire, stop provocations and make concessions for their joint security, ensuring peace through building enduring structures for social and economic justice.
"The United States, which has played a role in building tensions, can ameliorate them by pursuing peaceful diplomatic initiatives to end the cycle of violence. The world community is best served by helping warring factions step back from the brink of war and begin a new effort to achieve a lasting peace. The United States has the moral obligation to lead this effort."
