2006 Senator of the Year: Russ Feingold

Russ Feingold caught the attention of most Americans when he was the lone vote against USA PATRIOT in the Senate in 2001.  In 2005 and 2006, he again led the fight against USA PATRIOT.  Most member of Congress regained their seats on a promise of repealing USA PARTRIOT.  Then they turned around and voted for the renewal.  Feingold was true to his conscience and unsuccessfully tried to defeat the renewal.

Russ Feingold voted against the war in Iraq and on August 17, 2005, called for a withdrawal of the troops.  In April, 2006, he tried to amend a spending bill to include withdrawal from Iraq.

Russ Feingold introduced legislation in the U.S. Senate to abolish the death penalty.  The only two countries in the world that use the death penalty are the U.S. and Cuba.  This is a barbaric form of punishment that constitutes a form of genocide against poor minorities who are often wrongly convicted and executed.

Russ Feingold’s 2006 voting record is the best on our Senate Human Rights 2006 voting chart.  His score is far higher than that of any other member of the U.S. Senate.

On March 13, 2006, Senator Feingold introduced a resolution in the Senate to censure President George W. Bush .It’s failure showed the cowardice of other Democratic Senators to care about the deaths of close to 3000 Americans and over half a million civilians for a lie.
