2006 Congressman of the Year: Dennis J. Kucinich |
Dennis Kucinich has a perfect human rights voting record. In every area that touches human rights, his Congressional voting record is flawless.
Almost single-handedly, he is working to stop an expected war with Iran that nobody wants. He has worked tirelessly to get America out of Iraq. He has worked to end the funding that is keeping the war going. This is no surprise to everyone who realizes that he led the fight to keep America out of Iraq in the first place. If his cabinet-level Department of Peace becomes reality, future disasters like Iraq will be stopped.
He worked to stop the passage of USA PATRIOT in 2001 and he worked to stop its renewal in 2006. He is one of the small number of Congresspersons who voted against the Real ID Act in 2005, a major threat that could result in all Americans being forced to carry Nazi-style National ID Cards. This year he has repeatedly fought to protect the Constitution from further erosion.
In 2006, Dennis J. Kucinich introduced legislation to abolish the death penalty, a form of punishment that targets poor Americans and minorities. No other nation in the Western Hemisphere, outside of Cuba and the United States, executes its own citizens through capital punishment. Due to prosecutorial misconduct and mistakes, a large percentage of those on death row could be innocent.
In 2006, Dennis Kucinich introduced legislation to abolish all nuclear weapons. One of the main threats of nuclear proliferation is the threat that all life on Earth may be extinguished by hot tempers or accident. The only way to stop the nuclear threat is to abolish nuclear weapons.
Dennis Kucinich has repeatedly shown his commitment to the workers of America. His opposition to disastrous free trade agreements that have cost American workers their jobs sets an example that all members of Congress should follow.
Dennis Kucinich has worked to protect the environment from pollution, global warming and other threats.
Dennis Kucinich is a leader in terms of voters rights. He introduced legislation calling for a return to paper ballots. Computer experts who know how easy computerized voted can be manipulated and falsified support the return to paper ballots. So does the voting public. Dennis also supports expanding the right to vote to include those under 18. Over 400 Americans have died in Iraq before their first chance to vote in a Presidential election. Lowering the voting age would help end this injustice.
Dennis is also leading the fight for civil rights, health care for all, free college for all, and peace.
Dennis has the courage to ask the tough questions of the Bush Administration. He has launched inquiries in a variety of areas that could lead to impeachment of George W. Bush and those under Bush. These inquiries cover a number of areas, including the causes of the war, death squads in Iraq and military operations in Iran.
George W. Bush considers Dennis J. Kucinich to be one of the most influential leaders. The Republicans and the DLC spent a lot of money trying to defeat Dennis Kucinich this year. Dennis Kucinich still won by a landslide.
The voting on the award took place before Dennis Kucinich announced his candidacy for President in 2008. Following his announcement, the members of the Patrick Henry Democratic Club of America voted to endorse Dennis J. Kucinich for the Presidency.
